Leading Cause Of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in a person one or both lungs. These abnormal cells do not grow into healthy tissue and do not carry out the functions of normal lung cells (What Is Lung Cancer, 2016). As lung cancer grow, the abnormal cells can form tumors and interfere with the functioning of the lungs, which provides oxygen to the body through the blood, (What Is Lung Cancer, 2016). The use of cigarette smoking kills around 480,000 every year, (Burden of Tobacco Use in the U.S., 2016). Over 41,000 of these deaths come from second-hand smoke. Smoking-related illness in the country cost more than $300 billion in a year. Also, the exposure to environmental smokes and air pollutions contribute to it (Moore,2009). Authors from the Oncology Nursing society reported “In 2009, about 21% of U.S. adults were cigarette smokers; 90% of lung cancer deaths among men and approximately 80% of lung cancer deaths among women are related to smoking,” (Luftman, Martin, Guenthner, Arnold, Mullet, and Malhar,2011).
