As an adolescent girl on her way down to Dunedin for her first year of University I told my parents’ not to worry too much about my grades, because I was going to find myself a top-notch husband in the years I was studying. We all laughed about it like I was kidding, but the truth was, ever since I was young I dreamt of coming to University and meeting guys who all looked like the lead male role of a Rom-Com film and they were perfectly going to balance study and a social life like I was going to. I was going to meet the perfect one and we would grow old together telling tales to our grandchildren on how we fell in love at University when we met eyes from across the library and he slipped me a note with his cell phone number on it. In her article she speculates that at University traditional rules of dating don’t apply. A very casual approach is taken at University when it comes to dating which Goldhill suggests is because of student’s freedom of time, our tendency to hang out in groups and we get drunk a lot. Topuniversities.com published an article called “Five Unwritten Rules of University Dating”. The five unwritten rules all emphasised that any intimate moments, “having a thing”, saying you’ll meet again doesn’t mean you are in any kind of serious relationship. I began my degree seeing potential in all the wrong guys and eventually after a few falls I took an oath to a year of celibacy. This year I have decided to be open to relationships yet not go looking for it. As the year passes and not yet one date, I am quickly losing hope in my childhood dreams. Until today, As I sit in the library writing this feature article, a guy I see around sometimes sits next to me and asks to borrow my highlighter.
