Participants The participants for this digit span stud consisted of 3 subjects from a large public University. The participants comprised of 1 male and 2 female students with their age ranging from 18-21 years old. With regard to deficiencies, the male student reported that he has color-blindness, while the two female students did not report any deficiency.
Apparatus
This digit span experiment was conducted in the Social Sciences Laboratories at UCI. All three participants carried out the experiment through a computer software, MatLab. In order to implement the experiment, the stimuli used were strings of varied number of letters and randomized color condition or not, which were manipulated based on the experimental design. Figure 1 illustrates the negative trend between number of characters and the recalled accuracy through the percentage of correctness. The same test also displayed the significant effect of the interaction between number of characters and randomized color, F(3,6) = 20.364, p = 0.002.
With same ANOVA test, the within-subjects contrasts showed a significant difference among the levels of number of characters, F(1,2) = 65.871, p = 0.015. The within-subjects contrast also reveal a significant difference between randomized color and no color, F(1,2) = 256.000, p < 0.01. In addition to the ANOVA test, paired sample t test was also used to look at the two conditions.
