The very first ‘learned society’ meeting on 28 November 1660 followed a lecture at Gresham College by Christopher Wren. Joined by other leading polymaths…the group soon received royal approval, and from 1663 it would be known as 'The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge.
Unbeknown to the gentlemen in London that evening this meeting, in the middle of the 17th century, would revolutionize the future of a nation. The society became “royal” in 1662 by the granting of a charter by King Charles II. The Society influenced the development of the scientific community and defined modern science.
