Youth Victimization Essay

The youth between the ages of fifth teen and twenty-one that characterize themselves as a member of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) community face many mental health challenges within themselves. In many cases, individuals who perceive themselves with one of these characteristics face victimization and discrimination within their community. To prevent mental health issues such as depressions and suicide, the youth will need an abundance of family support and a sense of acceptance within themselves and other people. The study that the researchers chose was a survey. The study measured victimization and the mental health of the participants. 80% of the youth reported being attacked in some form and out of the 80% of individuals 42% attempted to commit suicide. The average rate of suicide for heterosexuals in the adolescents is 8 to 13%. Therefore, you conclude that society is destroying the youth. This is an astonishing statistic because we are potentially increasing suicidal rates by 29%. As a bystander we need to encourage each of the members of the community to feel comfortable and feel that they will not be judge for who they are. Also, schools should take the initiative to encourage students and facility to respect all students and make strict rules prohibiting the bullying and harassments of students. Victimization did not cause individuals to commit suicide but it did have a relation to it. The more victimization an individual received had a decrease in mental health. Then causing individuals to find a way to release their pain and ultimately turning to suicide as the answer. With proper training and educating the public on how to be accepting all people no matter the circumstances we can significantly reduce the
