Personal Narrative: I Grow-Up In The United States

Improved Essays
I have been a student of the United States of America’s economy for many years. I have been amazed by the opportunity that seems, or did seem, to be available to anyone who is willing to work hard. Prior to having children, I focused on the day-to-day needs of living; I did not worry much about retirement or building financial wealth. Today, things are different, I think constantly about retirement, I worry about the state of our country, and try to imagine how difficult becoming successful in life will be for my children. I am writing on this topic because it is something that I am passionate about, it is something that I know about, and it is something that is of great concern to me.
I grew-up during the “70s”, in a time when the federal government had little to no impact on the daily lives of individuals. During that time, if a person was

I define a “successful life” as having the ability to be self-dependent. I remember welfare and food-stamps from back in the “70s” and if a person was dependent on these types of government assistance to live, they did not live very comfortably. Most that received welfare were ashamed of it and worked very hard to remove themselves from …show more content…
I am concerned about this because it seems to be very clear to me. I am truly concerned about this because I have two wonderful boys that I want to see have the opportunity for a productive, successful, and self-dependent life. Political extremism is on the rise in this country and if it is not controlled it will be the end of a capitalist and free market America. The model of the American Dream is still clinging to life even amidst a recession that simply will not go away. I choose to write on this topic because it is something that I know, that I have experienced, and that I

American democracy is under threat as discussed by both Matthew Spalding and William Hudson. In their books, We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming our Future and American Democracy in Peril: Eight Challenges to America’s Future, written by Spalding and Hudson respectively, they list their reasons for this view. One leans more conservative and the other liberal yet the both reached the same conclusion in that American democracy is going through troubling times. Spalding on one hand believes government should stick to the way that America was envisioned in the constitution by our Founding Fathers and that Americans should be self-governing. Hudson believes that government is doing too little legislating, should…

To be an American can mean something different to almost everyone. Most people might would say that to be an American would be to have some political aspect, or to be excessively supportive of the military. Others would say Americans are all about their rights with their guns, sloppy bacon cheeseburgers, or Gittin’ r’ Done. I, on the other hand, say something completely different; something on the opposite end of the scale. America isn’t all about football, fried foods, or the glories of the faux, over dramaticized American dream life.…

I was born in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the place where all my best memories live. My mother gave birth to her first child at the age of 18 then to me a year later, she hadn’t finished high school so she trusted my grandparents to raise us in the city while she went to work in another. There was never a dull moment in our grandparents home, we would play countless games in the water when it rained and the yard would get flooded or get chased around by our guard dog as my family would watch laughing despite my fear of dogs. One of the things I will always be grateful for is growing up in Ethiopia, my days were filled with happiness and adventure that I will forever cherish. Moving to America was a drastic change for my brother and I, we would spend countless nights crying homesick, asking to go back home.…

After the election was called in favor of Donald Trump, many began to question the direction our nation would take, but it was widely perceived that we would move backwards due to his slogan “Make America Great Again.” It is commonly known, although not widely acknowledged, that America was not initially designed for the minorities to flourish. Our government was established to grant the white male all possession of political power, so moving backwards is clearly not an option, and stagnation is an irresponsible choice as well. Throughout our Nation’s history, Americans bore witness to a pattern of progression, one that has not been a continual incline, but a rise and fall of sorts.…

The American Dream is becoming harder to achieve. A report from the Pew Charitable Trusts found that “most Americans raised at the bottom of the income ladder never reach the middle rung.” Growing up in a poor migrant family I am experiencing many challenges that poor people have to overcome to move up. Ever since the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the United States government has failed to uphold several of the founding ideals, ideals set forth by fathers of our country. Over the years subsequent to 9/11, principles that helped shape America are being violated by our own government. Practically the entire Bill of Rights has been infringed upon as the government loosens restrictions on amendments. The ideal of equality, one that has remained an issue since the beginning of our nation, has become even more unbearable with pronounced racial profiling and a growing gap between social classes. In an attempt to make America more secure and safe from outside threats, the government is taking away the opportunities of thousands of immigrants…
