When a teacher and an aide are working together to plan lessons, deliver instruction and evaluate student progress, everyone benefits. Effective communication is the main priority. Teams need training in problem solving and communication skills and must put the strategies they’ve learned into place. The main reason I enjoy being a parapro is that I am able to incorporate new learning experiences. Marky, an autistic student who was having issues in his math work came to me for help. After attempting different methods of teaching, I found that he is a visual learner. Therefore, I had to teach him basic math skills using counting blocks and color by number. When he finally understood his schoolwork after struggling with it for weeks, he ran up to me with his paper that he had received an A on. Consequently, I know what methods to teach another student that is having similar difficulties and apply the proper teaching tools. Each year when they have advanced into the next grade, the teachers and the parents of the student keep me informed how well their child/children is doing. I love hearing how much each student is learning and growing into productive teens. Paraprofessionals may find themselves delivering primary instruction to students with disabilities and making curricular and instructional decisions without oversight of a licensed teacher, plan lessons, lead instruction, create and administer tests, and assign student grades (CITE A). With such a wide variety of tasks beings asked of a paraprofessional, it becomes clear why role confusion can occur. Examining the roles that paraprofessionals can take on, it is critical to approach it from a legal standpoint. Ashbaker and Morgan cite that out of 100 paraprofessionals, 95 spend 60% of their time teaching without a teacher present (CITE M). In Sioux City Community School District (2003), the district lost a lawsuit from parents of a 7 year-old…

They really inspire me to want to do everything that I could to graduate, they just came and gave us ideas of what we might go through when high school is over. It was a very good experience to talk to the teachers and get to know them, they made me feel like I could do whatever I want in life and no matter how many mistakes I make I will still go for it, just like they did. One of the teachers said to make mistakes in life but make sure that you don’t make too many that you can’t fix. I understand that teachers went through a lot in their high school life, but they manage to get back on their feet and keep on pushing, like Mrs. Ramirez story really stood out to me. She had a tough childhood and she was not doing too many great things, she was not so great in school, and even all that her parents didn’t even care, her mom didn’t want her to have a good education or a great future.…

I would make sure that my paraprofessional is well aware of what his or her role are within the classroom and also what they are responsible for and whom. Some roles that they could help take a part in, within the classroom is that they can help find resources to implement within the room, but it is ultimately, me as the teacher’s ultimate decision. It is good to get other ideas too, because they are a part of the room as well. A responsibility, that I could let them know that they are in charge of is, supervising students. This can range from different things, but a couple may be, hall duty, bus duty, lunch duty, and other activities that go on.…

Field Experience Working as a Para educator in the Mt. Pleasant School District had opened my understanding about how important it is the job of a teacher. As I observed Mrs. Ensminger performed her duties, it has confirmed my conviction that a teacher is a teacher because they do not see their duties as a job it is a calling. Mrs. Ensminger, a level 1 special education teacher, is already at school no later than 7:15 am. Before school even starts she is already coordinated with core class teachers what she need to work on every individual student under her care. First period in her class is Science.…
