I’ve always been a strong swimmer; I’ve always been determined and a believer, but I can't say I had ever thought about winning state. I was twelve years old in the summer of 2015, which turned out to be one of the most important and eventful summers of my life. I woke up on Thursday morning at 6:00, ready to start the first day of my state meet. The meet would take place at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wisconsin; lasting a full four days, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. On Thursday I would swim one event, Friday one more, and on Saturday and Sunday I would have two each. I knew it was going to be a long weekend and I couldn’t wait for it to start. Once we got to the meet on Thursday, it seemed like everything

After passing the qualifying test I moved on to the municipal lifeguard training program; which is a forty hour training course, a CPR course, and a written test. The hardest part of the program is the final swimming test; to qualify for a pool assignment, candidates must be able to swim 440 yards in 7 minutes and 40 seconds, or 6 minutes and 40 seconds to qualify for a beach assignment. Though out this whole process family and friends are making bets on the outcome. But I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was determined, all that training boiled down to that one moment. Walking to Penn Station I let out a sigh of relief, and hopped on the LIRR to go home.…

In the play The Cuban Swimmer, written by Milcha Sanchez-Scott, the general staging plays a big part in moving the story along. Stage directions, lighting, and sound effects work together to make The Cuban Swimmer a submersible one-act play. These properties of staging make the audience use their imagination to assume what the playwright is referring to. As the result of this, the play makes the audience feel like they are a part of it.…

There are many ways in which an author uses symbolism and metaphor as a means of communicating various ideas to the reader. For example, in Ozick’s short story, the shawl carries a certain amount of significance to each character that aids in the creation of artistic unity. Also, the strength of symbol’s impact on the reader largely depends on the context in which they are used. Furthermore, some stories use a narrative form of allegory in which the characters are meant to represent a larger humanistic trait, such as the degeneration of societal values, and attempt to convey some larger lesson, such as the importance of balance, or meaning to life that enhances the meaning of a story. In short, there are an immeasurable number of ways in which…

In this essay, I will discuss the carving of swimming reindeer one of the ice ages most beautiful pieces of art discovered in Montastruc, central France, from 13,000 years ago. I will begin to explain the significance of their design and use to our understanding of human development. The figure illustrates two reindeer that appear to be swimming and was found in Montastruc in central-southern France. When it was initially exhibited in Paris in 1867, the elaborate carving demonstrated that humans subsisted in conjunction with Ice Age animals and had inventive minds, the same as present humans (The British Museum, http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/all_current_exhibitions/swimming_reindeer.aspx)…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
