Growing up in a strict home with strict morals, I learned what the course text recognizes as gender roles throughout my childhood. I grew up in a family with a mom and dad who loved each other. I have always watched how my parents would interact and treat each other. They were male and female who would kiss each other and love each other. Growing up this lead to what I identify as my gender socialization. The book defines gender socialization as (). I have learned what is normal from witnessing a heterosexual couple. My parent’s marriage is an example of endogamy. Lecture describes endogamy as when you marry someone in the same social group as yourself. They shared similar faith, social status, race, and age. Also, growing up, my dad would …show more content…
I grew up in a house in the suburbs. It was a good neighborhood and there was no much crime around us. My class status that my family and I have definitely factors into the opportunities I am given and the relationships I have made. Being raised in urban setting with little crime kept me on the right path. In the past and present I have not experienced what the textbook refers to as primary deviance. Primary deviance is what would define as person as rule breaker. Going to a good school with good teachers who cared about their students kept me on the straight and narrow. The class category is a reason why I am able to go to a great university today. Drexel can be an expensive university. I do not think that without my families’ class status I would have had the opportunity to go to college and get a degree.
My dad is a business men and who is successful and good at what he does. My mom is a stay at home mom who never went to college. My dad helps me to do my best and strive to achieve anything I want. My mom came from a class status where she was not able to go to college and has done everything she can so that I can get a degree. Being a nurse has always been a dream of mine. Without my dad and my families support I am not sure if I would be able to reach all of the goals and aspirations that I have set for myself

My mom was one of six. My desire to have children could be based on the social force that women are caretakers. Having children of my own would fulfill my need to take care of others. Looking back on my goals of becoming a nurse anesthetist is something that would have never happened in the colonial era. Women stayed at home at took care of the house. The era we live in today where women are almost treated as equals has given me the opportunity to pursue my goals and become a nurse anesthetist. The book mentions a term called the glass ceiling. The glass ceiling is when women have reached the highest point in their careers. Maybe I have set such high goals for my career so that I can keep climbing the ladder of success and not stall. Being a woman, we can be over dominated and looked down on. My career goal will prove society wrong and show that women can achieve as much as

The process of constructing gender status are legitimated by the entire set of values in the society (Lorber, 1991). Gender stereotypes are highly prescriptive in the society (Prentice & Carranza, 2002). In the movie ‘Ma vie en Rose’ (1997), Ludovic is a boy who has great desire to be a girl, therefore he displays behaviors that violates the gender norms in the society. In this essay, I would like to use the social learning theory, the concept of social status, and the gender schema theory to explain how the social constructions of gender constrain Ludovic and his family. On the other hand, I would like to use the perceived social support from peers to homosexuals to describe how the constructions of gender enable Ludovic and his family in this…

Respecting myself is what I consider to be one of my defining characteristics, so when I heard one of my male cross country teammates saying offensive things about me and my female teammates, I had to say something. At this time four out of the six girls on my team were dealing with some type of injury. Problems with our hips, knees, and ankles were some of the issues we were dealing with. This particular male teammate was saying things like, “Our girls team is really slacking right now.” In addition, he was mocking us by saying, “I can’t go to practice today because I have a hangnail.”…

Social location is “The corners in life that people occupy because of their place in a society,” as defined by Henslin (2015). Henslin (2015) points out how sociologist look at how many things affect people’s behaviors, such as jobs, income, education, gender, etc., and how it also affects people’s ideas. Where we were born, when we were born, and who we are around when we are born greatly affects who we become in life. I am an 18-year-old Caucasian female who lives in Independence, Missouri. Due to the society, “a group of people who share a culture and a territory” (Henslin) I live in and my gender, I feel uncomfortable walking around outside at night when I am alone.…

I had a difficult time with that assignment because I really couldn 't identify specific ways I was socialized to know my gender identity. In retrospect, the ways in which I was socialized to be masculine are much more clear. Although I still believe my parents did their best to not emphasis gender specific roles, I was actually receiving a great deal of exposure to socially acceptable male and female behavior through the media, school, and my peers. I have learned that simply watching television bombards children with acceptable gendered behavior. Television commercials and shows clearly teach children stereotypical behavior for boys and girls.…

Childhood is described as the first social identity consciously experienced. During this time period, which has different time lengths and definitions that vary by culture, children are seen as “free from the pressures of adult life”. This can be true in instances of certain ethnicities, genders, and classes but the complete opposite in others. Childhood is different for different people, not everyone gets to have a carefree childhood and experience what more privileged people see as normal. Jenks argues that ‘childhood is not a natural but a social construct’ and that it is always associated with a variety of meanings and experiences.…
