James Bowen is a caring and musical, but lonely man. However, a part of this changes, and a part of it wasn't always the case: James undergoes some big changes to his character traits throughout his story. Finding Bob changes his life dramatically. Bob helps him through his addiction and changes him completely as a person. He goes from being a selfish, lonely person, to a caring, happier character.
James is caring, but he tells us how this wasn’t always the case: “He (Bob) was changing my attitude towards others as well (…) my life had become a very selfish one. It was all about my day-to-day survival. Bob’s arrival in my life had dramatically changed all that. I’d suddenly taken on an extra responsibility. Another being’s health and happiness was down to me.” (p. 93). James takes Bob to the vet and spends almost all of his food money on antibiotics for Bob. He nurtures Bob back to health, as well as looking for the cat's owner. This shows just how caring James is towards Bob. He takes care of Bob, even when he didn’t intend to keep him. He genuinely cared for the being. James undergoes a tremendous change of character, from being a selfish and self-centred addict, to being a loving and caring person, setting Bob’s needs in front of his own. …show more content…
He loves music. When all seemed lost, he still had his musical abilities. “I’d never given up on music, however. Even when the band broke up and it was clear that I wasn’t going to get anywhere professionally, I would spend hours most days playing the guitar, improvising songs (…) And busking had certainly made a difference to my life in recent years. Without it – and the money it generated – I dread to think what I would have ended up doing to earn cash." (p.82) James had always been musical, and it really helped him out.
