In the short story “Story of an hour’ by Kate Chopin tells a story of a women in critical heart condition and finding about her husband’s death. One might say the theme shows how life forbids the joy of freedom, not literally but figuratively. In this story Mrs. Mallard got the news of her husband’s death, she normally cried with grief but soon felt a sense of freedom from her husband and marriage. She knew she loved her husband and even liked her marriage to a certain extent but still felt that any or most marriage oppresses one or if not both partners. She also had sense of guilt for her joy of freedom because she knows society would frown upon this. Through extreme circumstances, right after she felt the joy of freedom she collapses and dies. Figuratively, this shows how our society and the universe doesn’t condone our lives to be free, or even get a false sense of freedom, since it turns out her husband was never dead in the first
