A Stolen Life has repeatedly been not only challenged but banned in many middle schools across the nation. This book has been banned for its references to drugs, smoking and alcohol, offensive language, sexually explicit, and being unsuited for age group. But should it be banned?
“A Stolen Life” should not be banned in any school because of what it has to offer to the reader. The first reason why this book should not be banned is because of how it might help those who are currently being abused. As stated in the Mic article “however, the book was kept in high school libraries because, as the superintendent said, the material “may be of help” to those who have suffered similar abuse.” Sometimes when a child is being abused the might not realize that they are being abused, until they read books such as this one and realize that what they might be enduring is not normal nor fine and tell an adult the confined in. There is a plethora of justifications to ban books from school, such as offensive languages, sexual explicitness or even violence. There books that make sense to be banned as it is extreme to young child's eyes, such as 50 Shade of Grey by E. L. James, while there are books on the ban list that holds an educational value and should be taught to the public, such as Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. There is some book that contains a miniscule of sexual explicit and violence, but some of these books have a greater educational value than the insignificant scenes. The Invisible Man is a perfect example, since it does depict some scene of nudity, but overall, the book teaches the reader about open one mind to other’s point of view and with this can open a whole new world for the better. The Invisible Man educational values may have a different approach from most books introduce to school, but overall Ellison still demonstrates the moral of the narrative.…

As Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Books have the capability to be any person's escape from reality and no book should ever be subjected to the term "banned". Every book has at least one good thing to offer, no matter how great or small. All the reader has to do is give the book a chance and find that one thing. The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is one such book that should be taught in high school.…

Most schools however ban it because of sexually explicit material. They don’t want the kids to be forced to have to hear anything that is unfit for the ears. School Board member Scott Veerkamp says when talking about a book called Song of Solomon, "I think if we give them a book with that smut in it, it legitimizes it” (Penner Par. 15). The book he is talking of a book about a black man who comes to grips with a complex family history. It also begins with suicide and ends with suicide and has a few sexual passages.…

I think that these reasons are good reasons to ban the book but I also feel that it should not be banned. This book can open up a teen’s eyes to the world around them. People that seem ok can be struggling and this book teaches that you should not just go into denial like Beth, but you should be more like Calvin and take action when someone is down in the dumps. The profanity in the story I also believe is a positive.…

Kurt Vonnegut said in “I Am Very Real,” “…words really don’t damage children much…” and “It was evil deeds and lying that hurt us.” The content of the novels doesn’t influence a child to become a bad person, but introducing and teaching them about the content is what really matters. Additionally, books containing descriptions and themes of drug-ridden or homosexual lifestyles have also had the unfortunate demise by being banned. While this may not be the most appropriate for children, if the reader can perceive what the novel is trying to say, it should not be banned. People should be exposed to lifestyles that are different than their own because it can help them become more tolerant and understanding of different people.…

One of the banned books is the book, 1984 by George Orwell. Reading 1984 in high school would be nothing new to high school students. So 1984 should be kept in the high school curriculum because it involves a good plot and interesting storyline, and the book is so similar to high school life that students would be able to connect to it better than adults. The content involved in the book, such as sexual content, and disturbing imagery is much more viewed in today’s society with video games and movies, that in 1984, it seems as though it were censored. So in conclusion, the book should be kept in the high school curriculum and not be…

The book I chose for banned book week is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book was published on July 11th, 1960. Harper Lee claims that this book is not autobiographical, but says there are many similarities between the story and her life. Her father was a lawyer as was Scout, who is the main character of the story. Harper said she was also a tomboy growing up similar to how Scout acts in the novel.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
