To be classified as a sport it is required to have an opponent, a goal, physical activity, and rules. Cheerleading has all of the above listed components. Before I go on, I would like to point out that there is a difference between school cheerleading and competitive or allstar cheerleading. Both are sports, but competitive cheerleading is more complex and it is also a more fitting example of a sport. School cheerleading can be complex just as well, but it all depends on where you go to school and how big your school is. So I will talk about competitive cheerleading.
The rules for cheerleading are simple. You are put in a category to compete in, it all depends on how big your gym is, the skills your routine is made up of, and how many people you have on your team. Just like a 4A school wouldn’t play against a 6A school, a level 3 team would not compete against a level 4 team. Just like a football game has 12 minutes in each quarter, cheerleaders get 2 and a half minutes to show the judges what they are bringing to the table.
