I would like to invite you and your colleagues to an open forum at our school to discuss this national uprising, #BlacklivesMatter movement. As a neighboring school, this movement hits close to home for many of our students and our local community. With you support and collaborative efforts, we can stand strong with our students and families against these injustices and provide the necessary resources for teachers to have these discussions in classrooms.

In a recent article I read, Beneath the Apathy, it discusses a survey given to teachers where it showed 97 percent of teachers agreed with the statement, ‘I care about my students’ academic and personal welfare both inside and outside of school.’ However, many Black students at 56 percent and Latino students at 57 percent agreed that they feel like their teachers care about them (Thompson, 2008). Your participation and collaboration will empower your students and staff to connect culturally around topics that are relevant to their lives.
