I did not want to sign up for this class. Even without others having to tell me so, I knew how poor of a speaker I am. There is almost a checklist that I have to go through every time I give a speech: rapid heart rate, a perceived idea of failing, hands that cannot stop shaking, thinking that the audience just does not care about what I have to say, along with many other belittling thoughts. While I may have not learned very much about how I am as a speaker, I have learned enough to start correcting myself so that I may, one day, become an enthusiastic speaker. This class took what little high school had taught me about speaking and raised it to a level I could not have thought I would have learned in just one semester. I know for a fact, that …show more content…
This is one area that hinders me in almost every way. To put it simply, I rarely believe that I can do something well. Any flaw, no matter how insignificant or nonexistent it may be, I will focus on. It will be on my mind well after I present, and it will lead me into whatever speech I may have to give afterwards. While it is a good thing to take in consideration what it is that you do well and what it is that you could do better, as I learned in this class, you never should focus on one if you have any plans on improving. On one hand, you may see yourself as a communication king and whatever you do is the best way to do it. On the other, and where I find myself often, one can neglect to nurture what good had been present. Thus letting what good there was to go to waste with no idea that this is something that can be brought up and blossom into something even better than …show more content…
One self-feedback at a time, I will look at what it was that I did well. When I have to tell a group of people of what it is that my shop does for our unit, I will not be focused at how much longer until I am done. I will instead, look at them. See what it is that they are telling me. With that I will adapt, much like I had to for this class. It is hardly a subject that one can master in a week or a year. This is something that will take many years to develop and even more before one can say that they are a good speaker. Luckily, I now have an understanding and with it, a goal for which to use

The purpose of this body of work was to address medication errors and safe medication administration practices in relation to practicing nurses and nursing students via several different approaches. These different approaches will be presented as three separate papers but interrelated themes. The specific purpose for each paper and the corresponding research questions were addressed individually in each chapter. The approach used in the first paper was a systematic literature search of medication administration errors and the pediatric population; five themes emerged including the incidence rate of medication administration errors, specific medications involved in medication administration errors and classification of the errors, why medication…

Introduction Definitions of intelligence vary among scholars, theorists, and laypersons, due to its multidimensionality. However, intelligence typically involves an individual’s ability to learn from experience and adapt to the environment in which they live. I believe that the construct of intelligence should encompass an individual’s ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal form, to think logically, and to express creativity. Two intelligence tests in which I recently had the opportunity to take and score included the Shipley Institute of Living Scale-2 and the Wonderlic Personnel Test.…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

I had never had an open dialog about race with my son until I started to read this chapter on race and ethnicity. This chapter open my eyes on how many minority women including myself can be discriminated against for being a single or divorced woman raising a child on their own and how we are considered a disadvantage minority at the bottom of the latter. Learning this made me feel uncomfortable because it made me feel so racially categorized. This started the dialog about race with my son, I asked him if he had ever felt discriminated against because of his race or ethnicity, he doesn’t think he had been, but he spoke about a time at Sam’s club gas station while filling up his gas tank, how a sale representative of a glass cleaning product…

Course Reflection 1. After taking the course Speech 301 during spring semester of 2017, I have learned that before any speech is presented it first needs to go through a process of constructing it, which takes time and effort. But that’s not all, it takes research, creativity, and practice to prepare and deliver a good speech. You need to get the audience attention before even telling then what your speech is about. After you start delivering the speech it is also important to keep the audiences attention throughout the whole speech such as, keep them interested, entertained, or in a suspense.…

I think I want to start writing my speech as soon as possible so I have more time to write it. The more time I have to write it and practice it, the better my speech will be when I present it. I have to try to space out the time I prepare for my speech and not cram everything in the last week and I will be one hundred percent prepared. Having more time for preparing myself, I will be able to use more coping techniques to calm myself, so then I will be confident. This class is helping me a lot…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Final Field Project For this assignment, I chose to interview my boyfriend Michael Hook. Throughout the time we have dated, he has always been someone I’ve admired and continuously pushes me to become a better person in all aspects. I wanted to interview him because the story of his company, to me, is pretty commendable and an interesting topic to discuss. Considering we have been dating for over four years, there was no research needed to prepare for this topic; we have discussed his job various times. For the opening, I began by thanking him for agreeing to participate in the interview and taking the time to answer the questions fully and to the best of his knowledge.…

I had never taken a course that involved writing a paper and then presenting a speech on it to the class. It was either one or the other, not both. That is what intrigued me to take this course before the semester started. For myself great strides were made in my ability to convince readers through the toulmin model, learned in this course.…

After looking through the inventories and the feedback I had received about my communication skills, I have found some communication skills I am quite effective at and some I should work on a little bit. My strengths seem to be listening, seeming alert, and being empathetic. People who gave me feedback said that they felt good when they spoke to me because they knew I was truly listening to their messages. I seemed alert by making eye contact, asking questions, and having a polite mannerism.…
