I will talk briefly in this paper about it. As I consider today’s church (non-Catholic), and the vow that was taken by saints such as Francis of Assisi, I think they would be extremely appalled and upset at the wealth that is wheeled by them. From this reading, I gathered that St. Francis was fully absorbed with poverty as a spiritual discipline. Care for the indigent and those who were not able to care for themselves does fall back

A few months after writing his song “Cinderella”, Steven Curtis Chapman’s youngest daughter was tragically hit by her brother’s SUV when she ran out to meet him upon his arrival home. This devastating event gave a whole new meaning to “Cinderella”, and Chapman poured more emotion into his performance of the song than ever before, using the song as a way to cope with his grief. In David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole, the Corbett family suffers from a similar experience when Becca and Howie’s four-year-old son, Danny, runs out in front of a car and is killed. All of the characters deal with the grief of losing someone so young, and all of them grieve in their own, unique ways. Lindsay-Abaire displays the theme that, while grief is a universal…

The attitudes towards “the poor” between 1450 and 1700 in Europe differed greatly depending on the speaker’s perspective. In general, those with greater power or a higher social ranking had a dismal opinion of the poor, and those who were more ordinary, didn’t necessarily look down on the poor so much as they pitied them. Another factor that changed views on the poor was the date. In the 15th century people had more understanding and empathy, but that drastically changed as the 16th century came around and people were skeptical and doubtful of the poor. Finally in the 17th century the views of the poor were once again regarded as with kindness and understanding.…

As seen in Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth, the rich would help society in distributing wealth. In essence, they did see the ongoing poverty and their vision was to use their superiority and their fortunes to further help the poor. However, this idea clearly shows how the economic elite still are in control and in charge. Although they feel some sense of responsibility to help the poor they still have the ideology were they will continue to dominate because of their wealth and success. Andrew Carnegie further states in the Gospel of Wealth that because they possessed much more wisdom they would be the ones to administer the wealth properly.…

A common mindset among the rich of the Victorian Era was that those who suffered from poverty had only themselves to blame. The upper-class saw themselves as superior because of their money, and the poor were looked down upon and blamed for their condition. The rich refused to accept any responsibility to help the poor, or even be kind to them, seeing them as “another race of creatures bound on other journeys”. Dickens challenged this outlook, and was disgusted by it, so he wrote the novella A Christmas Carol with the intent to change people’s views of the poor and society’s responsibility to them. Scrooge, who represents the richer class, is introduced as the personification of winter, after which Dickens uses Fezziwig who is the antithesis of Scrooge as an employer; Bob Cratchit and his family; and Ignorance and Want, in an attempt to illustrate the need for a more compassionate society.…

After many generations of living on the same land, they are suddenly forced of the land and without work, because land owners want to make a profit off the land. “…economic land was created out of ancestral estates, and over the wails of protest from employees and masters alike…” (6) The sudden chance came from the idea that gaining profit whether a Christian or not was fine as long as it was for “the greater glory of God. ”(7) As ideas began to shift it opened a world where money was not seen as sin, but a blessing from God.
