Hans’ services are now in high demand since people need their blinds painted black for potential bombings. Hans even paints for residents of Molching that cannot afford it. “A Song in the Dark,” is stolen from the mayor’s library as well as a dictionary that contains a letter inside. The letter is for Liesel from the mayor’s wife which reads that she hopes that someday Liesel will knock on the front door instead of coming in from the window. Near the end of the summer, Himmel Street experiences their first air raid and must report to the nearest safe basement.
