“All Star” by Smash Mouth is encouraging song about choosing to be spectacular at what you do. The tone of the song is quite casual, written in first person and as if it was a conversation between the listener and the singer. It starts off with the singer admitting that “somebody once told me that the world is going to roll me”, and that he “ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. Clearly he doesn’t think that he amounts to much in the long run when it comes to following the rules and book smarts. This is furthered by him going to say that “it didn’t make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb”.…

The words of a song can shift your emotions to make you feel contentment and merriment but it can also make you feel worthless and insulted. In your essay “Songs of the Summer of 1963… and 2013” you speak of the difference in music in the year of 1963 and how it was gleeful and uplifting and still is but you believe the music of this generation is so discrediting and malign. In my opinion, I agree this music can be extremely offensive to many people and it is saddening that we have to come to a time in the world when it’s a daily normality to hear the word “nigga” in a song or to hear women referred to as “bitches” and “hoes”. The music we hear today should be changing the way we feel by making a great difference in the world and unifying us as people not bringing us apart with derogatory statements in songs.…

The exposition started off the same as The Christmas Carrol.…

For centuries, song and dance have been a vital part in creating and expressing a community’s sense of identity. Through each, members are able to pass on traditions, make political statements, and express themselves. The tango and salsa styles of music and dance are prime examples of mobilities in Latin American music that help foster a sense of identity among the smaller communities, although each required international attention before earning recognition from its home country. Each style of music is a special hybrid of all kinds of influences, demonstrating a deep history that can also give some insight to the social outlook of the times. Despite the time gap between the emergence of the two styles (tango first appearing in the early 19th century while salsa came into the scene around the 1970s), both styles have contributed a significant impact in establishing a sense of identity among Latin American music.…

Again this is rooted in the origins of the game in Brazil and its development in a country plagued by racial and social inequality. According to Brazilian myth, soccer was brought to Brazil by the son of an English father and a Brazilian mother. When Calderón recorded, bachata was essentially a type of bolero, very little different from the Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian, Mexican and Peruvian music that inspired it. In subsequent years, the music began to define itself as a genre which, while still based principally on the bolero rhythm, is easily distinguishable from it. In order to understand these changes it is useful to divide the genre into the following categories, each of which roughly corresponds to a time period.…

According to Floyd, “summertime” was the opening song written by George Gershwin for his folk opera porgy and Bess in 1935 which was an easy lullaby (218). Summertime was an aria and it is somewhat attributed to Ira Gershwin. The song became a well-liked hit and to a great extent recorded jazz standard and its lyrics written by Dubose Heyward who is the author of novel porgy. This song was been labeled as on the classics by many and to a large extent a xenophobic minstrel by others. Regardless of Gershwin’s good will, Floyd exemplifies that George’s work was contentious and was damned for its so-called orthodox representation of the black American life (219).…
