A Sociopath: A Short Story

Dexter Morgan, Norman Bates, Frank Underwood are all sociopath’s that you love to watch on TV from the safety of your home, but what if you met one in real life? Chances are that you already have. On the outside we look, talk, and walk just like everyone else, but on the inside we are empty, I am empty. Talking about my diagnosis is hard. It scares people away or they start to treat me like a weird science project. They ask me a barrage of questions like “how, when, and where did you become like this?”. Adjusting has not been easy however I have managed. This is the story of how I came to be a sociopath, and how I dealt with it. I was involved in a tragic car accident three years ago. I was sitting next to my boyfriend in the passenger seat of his car when his vehicle swerved off the road and crashed into a tree. Two people lost their lives that night, figuratively I was one of them. He died on impact, and I experienced Traumatic brain injury specific to my limbic system. When I woke up in the hospital I had a sore back and throbbing headache. What I didn't know at the time was that temporary pain was the least of my problems. I studied people who society admired, and observed people who I found to be relatively normal. This aided me to better see the intellectual difference between right and wrong, understand society’s expectations, and learn what moral behavior is supposed to look like. I then applied my observations to my own life by “mimicking”, and created a persona for myself that appeared “normal” to society. Much like a chameleon who changes colors to avoid people from seeing him. Before the accident I had a moral of right and wrong built in, but in order to adjust to my new condition I had to Relearn
