Stagnant Wages for Middle Class Families, 11/13/2015

In today’s society, the middle class has become a major concern that needs to be addressed. Elizabeth Warren and other academic scholars have noticed the issue and have begun to discuss the reasoning for it. Elizabeth Warren wrote couple books that discuss the matter and she also personally takes about it in interviews, she gave very insightful reasoning’s to why this is occurring. To go even further into understanding this issue, a sociological approach was looked at. Thomas theory within the symbolic interaction paradigm, gave a very unique way of looking at this issue with the middle class.
Symbolic interaction paradigm is a sociological perspective that studies what people know and how they come to believe such things. This theorem consists of different theories that focus of different aspects of symbolic interaction, one of these theories is the Thomas Theorem. This theory deals with the aspect of people defining situations as real, which then causes it to be real in their consequences. One of these issues is the idea of needing to be defined as a “middle class” family. They feel that once they get to that status, they won’t have to worry or struggle anymore, that they can live their life stress free. Many families aim to be in the middle class, but once they get there they face an overwhelming struggle that they didn’t expect. Another approach the Thomas Theory can look at is the middle class’s issue regarding misconception of the benefits that credit cards can provide. Families believe that credit cards can be their savior when they are struggling, but in reality they cause more destruction.
