A Social Class System

Throughout history there has been somewhat of a social class system whether it was written in stone or perceived. People were separated into groups based on money, power, or even occupations. Social class system can date back to Ancient Rome, where people were split into three groups: patricians, plebeians, and slaves. A social hierarchy could be found almost anywhere, from the caste system in India to the upper, middle and lower class of the United States. However, social class has brought many issues. It has determined how people are treated in society. People of a lower class are looked down upon while the higher class is praised simply based on the financial standing. All through history, people have been oppressed by others based on superficial things, such as their income. Society has let people’s socioeconomic standing determine their happiness and self-worth even though they do not correlate at all. Authors during the nineteenth century often use their literary works to bring awareness of the way people in different classes are treated.
