A soccer game consists of two 45-minute halves where players, cover 10-12 kilometers at varying intensities throughout the game (Stølen et al., 2005, p. 503). Midfielders run the longest distance during a soccer match in comparison to the other positions. The ability to sustain the duration of the games illustrates the different physiological requirements needed for midfielders. Walking and jogging accounted for approximately 70% of the total activity during the game (Dill, 2014, p. 11). The exercise intensity exerted by the individual and running distance decreases during the second half of a game in comparison with the first half (Stølen et al., 2005, p. 503). Furthermore, relative to standard soccer players, elite players perform at 28% greater intensity (Bradley et al., 2010, p. 2343).
Midfield players tend to have a higher VO2 max than players of other positions as well as a superior high intensity running profile, which can be attributed to a high endurance capacity (Bradley et al., 2010, p. 2350). Cardiorespiratory endurance can be measured by determining VO2 max values. VO2 max values can illustrate the cardiorespiratory endurance of individuals. The VO2 max of male outfield players lie between 50 and 75 mL/kg/min while female players range from 38.6 to 57.6 mL/kg/min (Stølen et al., 2005, p. 509, p. 511).
