The application of color and paint in a piece creates a noticeable surface texture within the work. This surface texture can be used to enhance the general chaos or conversely the straightforwardness of a work. The use of color within the image also has an effect on the overall mood of the painting and the viewer’s perception of the subjects. In Claude Monet’s Grainstacks (Snow Effect) the heavily textured surface of the painting and visibility of the separate brush strokes creates a sense of complexity, which along with the practice of keeping colors separate, adds to the visual depth of an otherwise very plain subject but still enforces the general mood of the painting. On the other hand in Kingstein’s Christ in a Pawn Shop the surface texture…
Mark Bittman, author of the article “The Aliens Have Landed” published on the New York Times April 2, 2014 issue, argues that we need to take action to stop climate change. Bittman begins to support his argument by comparing our ignorant behavior towards climate change to the “retreating French” during World War II. He then informs the recent news from the Panel on Climate Change to emphasize the negative effects, and sarcastically compares them to aliens invading Earth. He next proposes a public works project and provides several examples of what can be done to start addressing climate change before it is too late. The author’s purpose is to…
Amazingly; the idea of climate change even occurring is half-heartedly dismissed in both articles. In Florida, for instance, discussion of needed changes regarding climate change is not even considered - “In October, Florida filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency, seeking to block new rules aimed at limiting warming by reducing power-plant emissions” (Miami citation). Instead of implementing much needed drastic measures needed to combat environmental policies, a lawsuit is filed…

Joseph F. C. DiMento and Pamela Doughman’s introduction to “Making Climate Change Understandable” presents an argument for climate change that denies frequent deliberate intervention with the climate by the human population but rather supports the accidental change in climate. The authors also claim that because climate change is so difficult to understand, people do not recognize it as a grave issue. Early in the text, DiMento and Doughman clearly state the purpose of the article as follows, to “explore changes in climate…address how the changes affect us…and explain what is being done to manage the changes” (DiMento 1). Although, they seem to struggle refuting arguments made by their opponents and use vague words throughout the text, the authors utilize evidence, argumentation and writing tactics to ultimately communicate their ideas.…
Global warming is turning into a huge problem today. Oil spills are happening, more and more pollution is being put into the air and causing problems with the ecosystem. Citizens see that this is evolving more and more each day and the government is just ignoring it for “bigger problems”. The ocean is being polluted and millions of dollars are spent almost every year trying to fix it the problem temporarily. The Democrats would like to fix all these environmental problems but they need to pass more laws for it and they must have the other party vote for those laws, which seems to be a challenge.…
Even with this happening, many still refuse to accept climate change. Both sides offer facts and attempt to persuade others, but all dispute aside, climate change is a pressing problem in the world. Climate change can be easily seen if one simply looks at the environmental changes happening around them. There are multiple things happening in the world that have not in…

Globalization, over population, and climate change are major concerns that continue to be ignored and discarded by government and citizens alike. Whether this is because they don’t believe the world is getting hotter or they do not think addressing population and globalization are economically doable, it is still a real problem. Thomas Friedman wrote the book Hot, Flat, and Crowded, which describes these issues and solutions to prevent them. Hot describes global warming, climate change and inefficiency in the energy industries. Flat is caused by globalization, how more people living in third world countries want to live the ideal American life, wasteful and inefficient.…
Al Gore’s book Truth to Power explains a climate crisis. The author explains how one problem can affect another, thus causing a domino effect on different places of the world. He explains how a climatic problem can affect millions of people, livestock, and businesses. Al Gore really makes the reader think once he or she begins reading his book, it helps the reader to be more aware of the conditions around him or her, and understand that his or her choices can harm another without even knowing it. He states three resounding questions for the reader:…
Frontline’s Climate of Doubt was a compelling film showing how climate change has become more of a political issue than an environmental one. The film followed correspondent John Hockenberry around the United States as he interviewed several individuals that included scientific specialist, conservative republicans and liberal democrats who may or may not have been holding a position in office at that point in time. He asked simplistic questions surrounding the issue of climate change that could have been answered by anyone who was able to comprehend their own beliefs, however some individuals refused to answer the question directly and the pattern seen behind their response seemed to be associated with their political choices. It was clear to see that throughout the film there was a trend occurring. Republicans refuse to believe that human-made climate change is an issue and the real question is why they believe such lies.…
The three issues that David Sirota suggests that we will face in the future are as follows: Global Climate Change (human produced pollution), economic conservatism (conservative economic ideology) and plutocracy. I agree that David Sirota makes valid points when it comes to: Global Climate Change: We have known for a long time that anthropogenic climate change is intensifying drought, flooding, storms, etc.; and that historically dry areas are becoming much dryer. In America, we seem to have decided not to do anything about carbon emissions or our profligate use of water.…
Working Outline Purpose: Informative Speech Specific Purpose: Awareness of the threat of global warming Introduction: I. In the words of Leonardo DiCaprio after receiving his Oscar, “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”…
Global warming has changed climate a lot since when I was younger. Right now it is December 18th and we have no snow. I think this is the first winter that we have had no snow; usually there is so much that we are having storm days at school. I heard on the news that we are predicted to not have very much snow this year and have a very hot summer because global warming has affected the climate so much.…
