This week I read Zebbie Watson’s A Single Deliberate Thing. This was a quiet story; I suppose it is about loneliness. We see the narrator’s (nameless) actions through their descriptions of their weekly farm chores. This story is written as a sort of letter to narrator’s boyfriend who has left to train in the army. The plot is framed by things the narrator thinks her absent boyfriend should know. Example: “I was counting swallows and waiting for the letter from Kentucky that might let me know if you still loved me.” Characters seems to trickle in and out of the story, no one really stands out except for the absent boyfriend and the narrator’s dying horse.
