In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, there is always reference to the quote “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird, because they represent innocence, and purity “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people's gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee). However, in a way they are all innocent, and convey the symbolic image of “Mockingbird”.

Tom Robinson shows the symbolic image of “Mockingbird” throughout the book in all the prejudice, and false judgement he has to go through. Like the bird, Tom Robinson is an innocent human, with no intentions in hurting people. His only intentions were to be a kind hearted caring gentleman, who helps out Mayella. Tom Robinson helped out Mayella with cutting up wood, fixing the doors, and busting up the chiffarobe. All he was being was a kind person, and was latter falsely accused of something he didn't even do. Tom Robinson was accused of assaulting, and raping Mayella Ewell, and ended up going to jail. He was completely innocent, and was falsely persecuted due to his skin colour. Tom shows complete innocence in this part of the book, for being wrongly accused, based on his skin tone. Another example on why Tom is a “Mockingbird”

He is one of the “mockingbirds” in the novel because of all the nice things he had done to the children, all the oppression he had gone through, and all the sacrifices he had made. Boo had done a lot of nice things to the children with no need acknowledgement from anyone, he just does it out of the goodness in his heart. Boo interacted with the kids by leaving them gum, in the tree for them to find, he didn't tell the kids it was him leaving them the “treasure” it was totally anonymous. Boo was also being kind to Scout when Miss Maudie's house burnt down he came and wrapped a blanket around Scout, with again, no acknowledgement. The last way he was kind to the children, was when Jem ripped, and lost his pants, running away from Mr.Radley, he got them and sewed them up again. Boo had also gone through really rough situation when he was trapped in his house for so long. When the children were talking to Miss Maudie, she implied that Boo was being tormented and abused, beyond imaginable. Also Mr.Radley is cutting Boo off from the outside world, when he fills the tree knot with cement. Boo is a “Mockingbird” as well because of all the sacrifices he made for the children. In reading “To Kill A Mockingbird” I learned that as a reader we are able to pick up on things before the actual characters in the book do, so we were able to see who the mockingbirds of the book were before they were mentioned or even if they were never mentioned as being so. Miss Maudie outlines the symbolism of what Atticus meant about mockingbirds when she hints that mockingbirds are innocent and do nothing but sing for us, therefore it is a sin to kill one (Lee 93; ch. 10). In the novel as a whole there is a constant battle of evil trying to destroy innocence, which the mockingbirds are meant to symbolize.
