The sneak attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7th lasted less than two hours and ended at 9:45 a.m. Americans killed numbered 2,402; 1,402 more were wounded; five battleships and two cruisers were sunk; seven smaller ships were damaged; and 188 aircraft were destroyed.

On December 8, 1941, the United States made a formal declaration of war on Japan. Japan’s attack had surprised even Hitler, the leader of Germany, but on December 11,
1941, the two other members of the Axis, Germany and Italy, also declared war on the United States. The Americans, under President Franklin D.Roosevelt, immediately responded with another formal declaration of war against all three members of the Axis. World War II had begun for the United States

On November 24th, the day before Thanksgiving, Dorie was in the galley helping to supervise the delivery of hundreds of frozen turkeys to prepare for the Thanksgiving feast for the crew of 915. They were unaware of the Japanese submarine I­175 lurking nearby, until a single Japanese torpedo struck the Liscome Bay in the stern. The torpedo detonated the aircraft bomb magazine, sinking the ship within minutes. Dorie Miller was not among the 272 survivors.

His parents were notified that their son, Doris “Dorie” Miller, was MIA (missing in action). The Second Baptist Church of Waco, Texas, held a memorial on April 30,
1944. On May 28, 1944, a granite marker was placed at Moore High School in Waco to honor him.
