A Short Summary On Bowditch

Improved Essays
Bowditch Middle School, the only middle school in Foster City, accepts students from three elementary schools. It is a California Distinguished School and yet, it doesn’t seem worthy to be acknowledged. The school enforces the rule that there are no backpacks on campus. This unjust law forces students to shove their backpacks into microscopic lockers and retrieve items from them in order to go to class. This is an absurd rule that needs to be changed.

The lockers on Bowditch campus are about 1 foot and a half by a foot and a half. With this size of a small cube, incoming 6th graders have to abandon their elementary school rolling backpacks to over-the-shoulder ones. In this miniature space, there is only room for a squished backpack and a few books. In addition to this banal design, most lockers are stuffed into a hall which students must infiltrate in order to go to their next class. The worst time of day is after school, when people are trying to reach

There were many times I have forgotten important material needed for class. I know what the teachers will say, “It is your responsibility as student to get all of our work in class on time.” However we can’t do that if we have other classes to attend to as well. To make matters worse, some teachers won’t even allow us to go back to our lockers to get our missing work. From what I remember, I had carry around at least three pounds of work to class, and it is incredibly hard to keep track of all my items.

In essence, students at Bowditch should be able to carry their own backpacks. Without our backpacks, it is too time consuming to retrieve our items. The lockers provided for us to place our school-related objects it too small. Finally, it is almost impossible for us to remember everything that we need for our next classes. These are all the reasons why students at Bowditch should be allowed to carry their own

Nathaniel Bowditch was an American mathematician who lived in Salem from 1773 to 1838. It is known that Bowditch was a real person, but were the characters that interacted with him, places he went and events that happened to him in Jean Lee Latham’s book Carry On, Mr. Bowditch also real? Nathaniel Bowditch grew up in Salem, Massachusetts with his brothers, sisters, parents and grandmother. He attended school until the age of 12 years old, when he apprenticed at Ropes and Hodges ship chandlery, which would last nine years, in 1785. This was where he learned about the equipment and supplies needed to outfit sailing ships and heard stories of exotic ports and people (Nugent).…

The one size fits it all clothing saying is also being applied to our children’s education. In Freemont High School by Jonathan Kozol, students are having trouble with school instead of enjoying it like most children should be enjoying their high school. Students are having obstacles to continuing their education by complaining that there is no air conditioning in classes, not enough courses, restrooms being closed, substitute teachers, and the library being occupied. In the passage “some of the classrooms ‘do not have air conditioning,’ so that the students ‘become red-faced and unable to concentrate’ during the extreme heat of summer’’…

When the rusted, old hinges creaked loudly, after being opened for the first time in 50 years, the noisy hallway was suddenly quiet and Danny could hear hushed tones coming from around him. He looked over his shoulder to see the students that stood in the hallway…

When I first started university, I had to go to an advising session; while, I do not remember what it was about, The one thing that managed to grab my attention was when the advisor said “I can spot a freshman a mile away” when someone asked her how, she replied” just search for people who look lost and confused”. It struck a chord deep within me because I was really lost and confused, not only that but also anxious, friendless, and afraid of all the responsibilities and of the possibility of failing. While my family assured me that these obstacles are the key element in becoming more responsible, and overcoming them will allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I, on the other hand, felt like these obstacles were not character builders, but more like energy and time consumers that affected the academic performances and health of both my peers’ and myself. I strongly believe that fixing these problems should be one of the university’s priorities.…

As a child, I would often struggle with reading assignments and I would lose focus on the subject. When I reminisce about those days, I recall those teachers like mechanics who did not fix the problems but sent the bill anyway. With that said, we can only focus today on where we want to go and not where we have…

On two seperate occassions this past week mistakes were made during lessons. I made a mistake on an assessment paper and copied the wrong side of the quiz and Mrs. Doss made a mistake and copied the wrong set of words for the entire class during word study. It really helped having 2 people in the classroom so new copies could be made and brought in ASAP. We were both able to laugh about it later in the day and realized we both were having a rough morning. I know that in a normal classroom you wont always have 2 people or a teachers aide to be able to fix mistakes.…

In the beginning of high school, I couldn’t understand the importance of handling my responsibilities, especially when it came to my school work. I just couldn’t find the motivation to hand in stuff like homework on time. I actually started to do less and less each school year. I never try to fix my problem because there were never any consequences to it. I would pass all my classes with decent grades with no problems despite ignoring a lot of the work, but then I was called by my English teacher to stay after class.…

A counter argument may be that non-LD students are classified as LD, but in actuality are just are lazy and do not put forth an effort. That is not always the case. It has been proven that this is not true. There was a research where LD students that were recognized by the school as LD were compared to non-LD students who were not recognized. Although the scores were similar, forty percent of the students had a possibility of being classified incorrectly.…

In an article titled “What’s Holding Back American Teenagers?” by author Laurence Steinberg, the claim is made that, “Our high schools are a disaster.” Steinberg begins by mentioning education policies which had recently come to the attention of Obama during his term as president. This involved two issues, the first being early-childhood education and the second being college accessibility; however, Steinberg’s article preferred to focus on a third issue: American high schools. Throughout the article, he continually reflected on research from organizations such as OECD, The National Assessment of Educational Progress, and The National Center for Education Statistics.…

The procedure that I implemented affects whole class student learning because I am able to more efficiently use my time. Instead of taking time out of my day to get the Absent Folder, find all of the work that belongs in the folder, and place it on the student’s desk, I can spend time teaching students. Since all of the absent student’s work is in one place, when the student returns, he is able to look through the work and ask questions when I am free, thus freeing up my time to spend teaching the whole class. The responsible student’s job was understood by the students and they were also excited to have this new duty of taking care of the absent student. I feel that this procedure gives the students some responsibility which also builds their confidence and their feeling of being a part of the class community.…

There are so many reasons people are pro homework. People say “it helps them become smarter or helps them on test,” But there is a lack of evidence where it actually supports their claims, that it helps students at all especially at such a young age. with Alfie Khon “The positive effects of homework are largely mythical.”(Khon). It also seems that homework is being forced onto younger students more often than the older ones. I remember getting tons of homework in Elementary school, and not having the time to play outside, the stress, and my parents struggling to help me on problems I didn’t know.…
