A Short Story: Strangers In The Dumpster

Improved Essays
On a cold chilly winter day the wind howled blowing snow that whipped hard against Westfield high school. It wasn’t normal for the weather to be this cold as Canada didn’t exactly have the stereotype Canadian winters people perceived, but a 12th grader named Ryder knew he couldn’t use the -35 degree weather as an excuse to skip class because there he was sitting at the back of English class with his feet propped up onto the desk and his arms behind his head. He did not want to be there.
“Ryder, how about you tell me what year Shakesphere died? And while you’re at it, you can take your feet off the desk,” said Mrs. Honey said tilting her head as a smug smile laced her lips. Heads turned from around the room focusing on Ryder. This

Perhaps he was wrong about the acceptation because her jet-black hair and blue icy eyes still mattered. She still mattered.
“Ryder, you’ll be there too right?’” Louisa finally said.
“Yeah! Of course I’ll be there why? Are you going?” Ryder asked “Oh right. Right of course your going you’re Louisa-I mean yeah I’m going but doesn’t mean I’ll see you.” He said all gangster like noticing Matt was looking at him. Dammit Ryder thought.
After moments of utter silence she just nodded, said goodbye and continued on her way. Ryder obviously made her upset. The rest of the day was extremely dreadful! All he did was attempt to avoid Louisa in anyway possible, he was finally glad to return home and eat Mac n’ cheese for supper. Ryder lay atop his neatly made bed with the old Spiderman covers he’d had since he was a kid. As much as Ryder tried to get rid of them he never did. He supposed he didn’t want to because it was a reminder of the good times and that his mom would be happy

The voices continued on and on until Friday, the day of the party. It was now 10:00 pm and the party was nearly over and all Ryder had done being anxious because he hadn’t seen Louisa or Matt around anywhere, he was also quite bored sitting in the corner with Matt’s girlfriend Christina while she talked about how when she was done her education she would be the world’s greatest doctor, so he decided to leave Christina alone with her thoughts venturing off to find his friends. He walked one foot in front of the other on a crowded staircase with little tiny lights lacing the banister and people drinking god knows what in those red plastic cups. He turned a corner to find a bedroom that he knew to be Matt’s and opened the door with a quick pull. “Oh goody the love doctor came to the rescue,” Matt turned around although it wasn’t him. It was blue faced and all extraterrestrial looking, long black fingernails that were covered in Louisa’s blood from the new fleshy slashes on her face. A cold chill slithered down Ryder’s spine, he was speechless. Thoughts had clouded his head like clouds canceled the moon on a darkened night, he thought so much but he couldn’t fathom into words what to make out of this.
“I knew you liked her from the very beginning-that voice in your head was me, though my powers and

In the year 2017, most modern societies have ultimately adopted an ideology of overconsumption and consumerism. This adoption of overindulgence and extravagant spending is the focus of journalist James Hamblin’s profile, Living Simply in a Dumpster. In this article, Mr. Hamblin writes about Jeff Wilson, the dean of the Houston-Tillotson University, and his message about rejecting indulgence and returning to a practice of living in deliberation and ecological awareness. This idea is communicated and dramatized by both the journalist and the dean through a compelling use of ethos, logos, and kairos. James Hamblin and Jeff Wilson ultimately strengthen Wilson’s message about living deliberately by establishing themselves as credible, authoritative,…
