They sat on opposite ends of a subway bench. She was young, and didn’t understand pain like he did. He was always running, constantly gone and never in one place for long. She was named Pacifica, after the very ocean that had kept her parents apart. He was named Brooklyn after the city that brought his parents together. She saw life in black and white. He saw life in gray. She pitied him for being so cynical. He laughed at her for being so naive.

Pacifica glanced at her watch, shivering slightly as she felt the cold New York breeze. She pulled her coat tighter. With her head down, she took a quick look at the boy sitting beside her. He stared straight ahead, eyes narrowed as if he had somewhere to be. He didn’t, he never did.
Brooklyn stared straight ahead, eyes focussed on the grimy yellow sign. He knew she was staring, but he let her stare. She kept looking at her watch. She had somewhere to be. Girls like her always had somewhere to be.
