Course Material: There are many factors to why one bullies. First of all, it might not even be intentional. Although communication competence begins to develop at a young age, many learn it later in life and some don’t at all. Sometimes misunderstandings occur, which can cause others to be hurt or angered. Social Communication Disorder (SCD) also known as Semantic Pragmatic Disorder, is being unable to understand meaning of what people say, and having difficulty with pragmatics, knowing what to say and when to say it (“Understanding Social Communication Disorder”, 2014). Children with low self-esteem often ridicule others as a mean of raising their own self esteem up. When one presents their “face” they think of life as a stage in where they are performing. By ridiculing someone else, the stage light is focused on other’s flaws instead of one’s own. We often don’t like to be the cause of why others lose face, making it easier to bully online, where we can’t see the effects in real time. Looking for any signs of it is the first step. Before accusing anyone of anything perception checking should be done. Looking for signs that might point to the child bullying like aggressive behaviors, and controlling of others. Asking how their day went and how they interact with other kids is a good way of listening to the child, not just for finding clues, but also to understand them better. The next step is to disclose. Open up with the child, talk about emotions. This helps by troubleshooting any issues a child might have, therefore they don’t take it out on weaker children at school. Maybe the child is angry at home because of a sibling being mean to them, and they decided to take that anger out on someone else. By knowing this kind of information, the problem at home can be fixed, making the child happier. The third step is to have a healthy family communication climate. By knowing that your family is there for you, other things might not matter as much. Being high on the school hierarchy won’t be as important. Same thing applies to power hunger. By teaching these supportive beliefs the child’s thinking and perspective will change, hopefully into something
