Introduction
Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease that is becoming more and more prevalent in the United States of America and throughout the world. Type 2 diabetes is when a person’s body does not respond normally to insulin. The pancreas will still produce insulin in response to food being ingested, but the body does not display the proper response, this is known as insulin resistance. As a result, blood glucose becomes very high and the person is in a state known as hyperglycemia. People with type 2 diabetes have a much higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and many other diseases (1). Therefore, people with type 2 diabetes need to get proper treatment and make lifestyle changes in order to get their disease under control and prevent other diseases from occurring.
Type 2 diabetes has doubled over the past 30 years in the United States (2). People who are overweight and obese are at a higher risk of developing this type of diabetes. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are on the rise in our country because of the easy access to processed foods, fast food restaurants, and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. Type 2 diabetes was commonly referred to as “adult-onset” diabetes because it was usually diagnosed in older people. This term is being used less often now because this type of diabetes is also on the rise in adolescents and teens. It is also a very expensive disease.
