A Short Narrative Essay: The First Gobble

The first Gobble
As I wake up, I'm annoyed by the alarm I hear. Then I look at my phone to see why I'm waking up at 4:30 and instantly I'm up and awake. It's finally turkey season! I grab everything I see out the night before, the decoys, calls, food, water, and of course the shotgun. At about 4:35 I'm out of the house and walking through the field. All that can be seen by me, is an ocean of hay and I hope I'm walking to the right place, because I cannot even make out the treeline. Soon enough as I'm walking I see a rabbit in front of me and I wonder if this could mean luck, or else bad luck. The rabbit could be a sign that I don't take very seriously and am mostly shocked to see it so close to me without running away. I stand watching him, his ears perk up and soon he’s standing on his hind legs because he knows im there, then he darts across the field and continues to

The trek continues through the dark field, however shortly after walking I am shocked by what I hear. Echoing through the field of darkness I hear the bone chilling sound of a male turkey gobbling, this instantly gives me a rush knowing he is so close to where I'm hunting. My turkey blind finally comes into my sight and I get settled down. As the rising sun comes up i see a thick cloud a fog rolling across the hay field that blinds my vision to about 60 yards and I have no idea where that tom is perched at so I start by doing a few cutt calls, a cutt is a sharp cherp made from the friction of a small wooden box and a wooden stick sliding across it. I do this noise about 5 times then stop. This doesn't seem to work so I get out of the turkey bling and plant a few decoys in front of my field of vision, these decoys will encourage a tom that sees these to come and breed with the hens, not knowing i will be watching him. After hours of calling and not getting responses I start to try

Gregg Cantrell’s book “Feeding the Wolf: John B. Rayner & the Politics of Race” dives into the life of Rayner as an African-American politician of the Populists party during Reconstruction. Cantrell gives a thorough history of Rayner’s life with a white father, who is also a politician, and being born to a slave mother. Cantrell then examines Raynor’s life as a politician driven to defeat the Democratic party, much like his father. The book nicely details the ups and downs of politics with the Populist party, how race is affected, and how these changes affected Mr. Rayner. The author does well to involve the reader with his well-researched facts throughout the book.…

I was being patient though and not trying to rush things because even at the sight of deer my heart would start pounding out of my chest! My dad would always remind me “You just have to breath and stay calm then aim at the front shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”…

Based on the 1953 short story by Roald Dahl, Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of Lamb to the Slaughter displays several changes that are critical to how the story unfolds. There are changes in scenes, characterization, ways the plot differs, etc. People say that the movies are never live up to the books, or short story in this case, but this adaptation gives the audience more detail than the story itself. One of the major changes is the dialogue that is added on in the adaptation and the dialogue that is removed from the short story.…

Chapter 4 of The Storytelling Animal is rather simple to digest. It follows the formula set forth by previous chapter, so the argument follows the same structure. My First Deer One brisk 30 degree day in January, when I was nine years old, was a day for which I was extremely excited. My dad got me out of school earlier that day, so we could go deer hunting. I had already shot a turkey the year before, so guns were nothing new to me. We made a quick stop at my house so that we could pick up the .243 youth edition, a really short barreled .243, that my dad had bought just about a month before so that we could go hunting, and I would actually be able to handle the gun. At this point we did not have the hunting land that we do today, so we went to my grandpa’s house and hunted in the clearing of trees behind his house.…
