As a local resident of Placentia, California I was able to better understand my city through my research. After overlooking my analysis a service that could help Placentia improve is a Career Development program. This is a long-term approach and focuses on the areas such as the La Jolla neighborhood that I will further discuss. The goal is to make Placentia well rounded and an appealing area to live in throughout all of its neighborhoods.

Median Age and Household The Placentia Library District Demographic Profile from 2010 listed the median age increased from 33 to 36 since 2000. This median age is a little over the state median of 35. Placentia is a traditional city and considering the dimensions the total area is 6.6 square miles, fairly

The document stated “Early childhood, beginning in infancy, is a period of profound advances in reasoning, language acquisition, and problem solving, and importably, a child’s environment can dramatically influence the edge and pace of these advances”. The outcome is greater for the child, parent, and society when viewed in a larger perspective.

In the La Jolla neighborhood parents are unable to apply enough interaction with their children and consequently leads to a cycle of very little improvement. The important stages in a child or teenagers life will unfold as an adult, where responsibilities and building a career could be difficult. Through personal experience school was difficult for me growing up living in a low income household. The interaction that I had with my parents was limited due to their extreme work schedules, therefore I was often times teaching myself. Now that I’m an adult if there was a profound influence in my education I could have viewed school as less of a burden. The Career Development Program can progressively help those who view school negatively. It may not tackle all areas of childhood development but it is a foot in the door that wasn 't there

Of those students, only 36% chose a major that fit their interest. The 44% of students that didn 't continue with what they thought was their desired major lost time and pushed back their graduation date.

The desired outcome of this Career Development Program is to increase the percentage of students that pick a major that best fits their interest. With this program mentors will be able to help guide these adolescents with research on specific careers and whether or not it is something they are interested in. It is just a start but can trigger certain questions to these students that can be answered, such as:

What do I like?
Can I make it a career?
What are the duties within this specific job?
How will I get

As part of the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model (WCSCM), career planning is part of a threefold domain; including academics and personal/social needs. Career planning begins in kindergarten in the simplest of forms, such as, asking students what their parent’s occupations are and giving them examples of careers people have. In fourth grade, Hemlock Creek Elementary School students complete a Learner Resume. The student fill out their resume; including information on their motivators, strengths, challenges, what they want to be when they grow up, how they learn best, etc. The student is in charge in hopes they will express and articulate their own needs and wants to their parents.…

As I will be working as a school counselor in a high school setting, most of my students will be thinking about where they want to go to college, what they want to study, or what careers they would be interested in pursuing. For many students, the pressure to determine the “perfect” college or career can be crippling and often a cause of immense stress. As a school counselor, I can use Happenstance to assure students that the question, “What should I be when I grow up?” does not necessarily need to be answered or even planned for. Instead, I can work with my students to convey the importance of engaging in a variety of activities that may present various alternatives and choices to them. If my students can remain alert to these alternative opportunities, they will have more career paths to choose…

Advice Dated as College Itself Let’s retire the exhausted mantra, “You need to go to college to be successful.” For many incoming freshman, four years of meticulous studying in high school have fallen short in helping to pick a major. While the world opens its arms to hard working high school graduates, many students have given little thought to a career path, while some are simply burnt out by school. Liz Freedman is the author of “The Developmental Disconnect in Choosing a Major”, an online article published on Penn State’s academic advisory journal “The Mentor.” In her article, Freedman cites a number of statistics such as the 20%-50% of students entering college as “undecided”, and the 75% of students who change their major at least once.…

Special Population: Low-Income High School Students Background While high school students’ dropout rates in general are declining, dropout rates for low-income students are still four and a half times greater than those of higher income students (Stark & Noel, 2015). This is important because, according to Bridgeland, Dilulio and Morrison (2006), from Civic Enterprises, “Dropouts are much more likely than their peers who graduate to be unemployed, living in poverty, receiving public assistance, in prison, on death row, unhealthy, divorced, and single parents with children who drop out from high school themselves” (p.3). Low-income students that drop out are essentially continuing the same cycle that they were raised in. Unique Challenges…

In order to help students find their own paths and make goals surrounding their individualized paths, students should be required to visit their respective guidance counselor on these matters. Though it should not be intensive in their first year of high school, counselors should instill in these students to explore their potential likes and dislikes. As these students grow older it should be the mandate of the counselor to help explore their career paths and their reason behind it. If their reason behind a certain path is due to societal or parental influence then it should be further expanded upon. If a student’s motivation to succeed in life is not true and forthright then their true potential could be buried.…
