A Separate Peace by John Knowles is about a group of boys at an all boys boarding school called Devon during WWII and their hardships as their easy going summer session ways change into the winter war-stricken ways. The setting of the book influences many of the boys to behave differently than they would if there was no war going on. The setting is a major factor in what kind of a person someone becomes, the time of year, country or area, and the events in history that led up to the time are all big factors that change character
There is no doubt that setting is a major factor and that one of the main contributions is the season and time of year change a lot of the plot line. We also would see a big change in the ways that the boys are acting. In the winter, the rules are hard and strict, contrasting to the summer, when rules are less strict and more lenient. “ The Master [Mr.Prud’Homme] was slipping from his official position…”(22). If the story would have taken place all through summer session and not during winter session we would see the boys fooling around a lot more. The location of the boarding school plays a major role in character development. Finny may not have thought the war was bogus or fake if he and the other boys were living in London at the time that the story took place. “Do you really think the US is at war with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan” (115). Finny doesn’t believe that the US is at war with the Germans, but he would have believed the war was real if he was in the midst of all the fighting going on around him. The boys would all have been very different people growing up while in London instead of the quiet state of
