Despite only being five minutes long, the video for A Separate Peace by John Knowles created by myself and Matt Rossignol had a lot of thought put into it. Balancing the characters and their conflicts as well as the themes in the novel was no simple task. However, the video was created and utilized color, pictures, quotes, transitions, and music to convey our messages about each character. One of the first decisions that we had made was to keep the characters separated to focus on each one individually and to ensure that the viewer understood what character was being shown. Themes of some characters overlapped with others, and to attempt to show more than one at a time could have resulted in confusion for the viewer. Another decision that …show more content…
His story was the most fleshed out, so creating his portion was less of a challenge than other, less developed characters such as Leper and Brinker. In his title slide, the background was blue as to convey his depressing story early on in the presentation. The first two pictures were added to convey Gene’s character of a studious conformist, but the later slides begin to show how Finny had affected him. The quote of Gene reflecting on his envy of Finny was colored red with black text to demonstrate his growing aggression towards Finny despite how he says otherwise. The next two images were important moments in the story for Gene, but the next important picture was a quote revolving around rejection and affection. It demonstrates Gene’s desire and need for Finny’s approval and his ever-shifting identity. The color of the text in the next quote that was placed over the image of Finny’s pink polo shows Gene’s completely different and depressed state of mind in contrast to how he felt prior to Finny’s fall. Afterwards, there are images showing Gene’s new purpose in life, which is to live out Finny’s fantasy of becoming an Olympic athlete. Finally, there is the court and marble stairs that kill Finny. The image of the stairs fades into a black screen to show the dark moment in Gene’s life that was caused by the death of Finny. Gene’s enlistment was grayed out to further this point, and the final image for Gene was the image of him alone with the tree to show his isolation from the world without

During Gene’s time at Devon, he faced many internal conflicts. Most of which consisted in forms of raging envy for Finny’s unconditional talent for any sport, good looks, and popularity. Instead of accepting the fact that Finny was simply a better human and leaning his focus onto self-improvement, he concluded that Finny must be jealous too. Gene wanted to excel at something related to how Finny had exceeded. Wistfully Gene’s plan later resulted in Phineas’ death; therefore, he clearly did not deal with his conflict in an appropriate way, but Finny’s death did end Gene’s war.…

In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, two symbols that are key to the novel are the two rivers; Devon and Naguamsett. The Devon River is perceived to be immaculate and more pure than the Naguamsett, which Gene views himself as, and Finny as the perfect Devon. In the novel, Gene felt as if Finny was always the entertaining person and he was the complete opposite. The rivers were always compared to each other much like Gene and Finny. The Devon was often referred to as “… the fresh water Devon…where [they] had so much fun, all the summer”…

He understands that he was symbolizing his desire to be like his best friend by detesting Finny for possessing all the qualities Gene himself craved. World War II as a Symbol in A Separate Peace In A Separate Peace, John Knowles uses World War II to symbolize denial of conflict and feelings, the reality of impending adulthood, and internal conflict in the minds of Gene and Finny. The war and the question of whether or not to enlist are omnipresent worries in the minds of the boys at the Devon School in New Hampshire. Although World War II is a major conflict in the novel, the various forms of strife it symbolizes are much more significant in the development of Knowles’ story. World War II symbolizes denial in many forms. For much of the novel, Finny refuses to believe that the war actually exists, referring to the combat as “nothing more than a ploy concocted by fat, old, wealthy men” (Adney…

The figures of Adam and Eve, Judas, Apollo, Pan, Phthonus, and Jesus are all strongly alluded to throughout the book within the characters of Gene, Finny, Leper and Brinker. This will be strongly demonstrated through the following comparisons of Greek myths and biblical stories and, the events that surround the characters of A Separate Peace. The story of Adam and Eve is quite simple; God created a man named Adam and gave him a wife by taking one of Adam’s ribs to form her.…
