Oftentimes close friends can turn into foes through the aspect of jealousy between the two, and ultimately resulting in a tragic death of the friendship. In A Separate Peace By John Knowles there is a lot of jealousy between one character, Gene. Gene is jealous of Finny in ways that hurt their relationship. Both kids enjoy going to the tree in Devon school, where Gene is driven by his jealousy and hurts his friend.
Gene walks to school for the first time after summer break. He sees that the floors are hard and there is a different smell. He hasn't seen finny in a while and he wanted to see him. Gene was very jealous of Finny but he thought it was natural. one reason why gene was jealous of finny was because he could get away with anything with anyone. gene quotes about Finny saying “i was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that little, which was perfectly. There was no harm in envying your best friend a little’’.(Knowles 20) Gene is saying that finny could get away with anything. Finny and gene missed dinner their substitute teacher Mr. Prud tried to discipline them for what they did but finny was to good of talker so he gets them out of trouble.

Earlier in the book finny could get away with anything but after he wa crippled he hasn't been able to charm his way out of everything. “For a moment i was almost taken but then my eyes fell on the bound and cast white mass pointing at me and as it was always to do, it brought me down out of fanny,s world of invention , down against i had fallen after awakening that morning, down to reality , to the facts.”(Knowles
