Gene is motivated by his hatred and jealousy of Finny. Gene hates how easy everything comes to Phineas. He resents the ease of Phineas's physical ability and how spontaneous and socially accepted he is. Gene resents how free Phineas is. Throughout this novel Gene acts as Finny's opposite but he also becomes his double. He admitted to hating Phineas for beating the school record without even a day of training. Gene starts thinking completely irrationally he convinces himself that Finny is jealous of him for getting good grades, and that's why he created blitz ball and the suicide club. Gene seems to be going a little crazy because he says “His instinct for sharing everything with me? Sure, he wanted to share everything with me, especially his possession of D’s in every subject” (Knowles 53). Gene has convinced himself that Phineas wants to be better than him and that he calculated everything and is just trying to trick him. He thinks that they are in a rivalry with each other but Phineas isn't trying to be better than anyone. It didn't take very long for me to start hating Gene. Because he is an awful person it's his fault that Phineas is dead. Phineas deserved to have a better “best friend” than Gene, Phineas was an amazing guy and he had so much to live
