When considering Gene and Finny’s Friendship equality is the most affecting and toxic. An example of this is when Gene wants to jump, because Finny is jumping. In the novel from Gene’s narration it reads “What was I doing up here anyway?Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this? Was he getting some kind of hold over me?” (1.32). Throughout this novel we get a first hand look at Gene’s thoughts and feeling. We can tell by this inner monologue he is upset with himself, and Finny for somehow controlling him. This is a very scary and real factor in their fantasy world. An example in the story is “It made finny seem too unusual for- not friendship but too unusual for rivalry.” (3.63). In this quote we see that Gene has discovered a way to deal with his unnatural feelings. Instead of being in competition with Finny he becomes him.
