Our main character Gene has changed a lot from the first three chapters to now in the book. During chapters four through six Gene cared a lot more about his appearance and did everything he could to better himself. In chapter four, Gene studies and puts more effort into school so he can achieve best in his class academically. Him doing this betters his chances of beating out Chet for top of class. Along with studying, Gene also would steer Chet’s mindset in the wrong direction so he would do worse on tests and get carried away on information that doesn't matter. The obvious one is in chapter four him shattering his legs being done with sports forever. This is devastating for for Phineas because that was his bread and butter without sports he’s just a normal kid casted into the shadows. Then at the end of chapter six, he forced Gene into playing sports because he wasn’t able to play them himself. This is, in my head, Phineas throwing in the towel knowing that he’s nothing anymore and Gene being so powerful giving up his powers of spots and giving them to Gene. Phineas knows that, with him not being able to do anything faster than walking, sports are over for him, but notices that Gene is still competing for top dog and with a little help can outdo all his competition.
