In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” depicts a story of a man who killed out of intense exasperation for a insult that may have been immature. The person that insulted him was his associate Fortunato. In “A Rose for Emily” by William Faukner, illustrates a tale of a woman who was deprived of social interaction by her father. Her mental state years later will eventually lead her to kill the one she loves. Comparing the two stories both of the killers killed someone that was close to them, but their motives were different.
Emily and Montresor both killed someone they knew. Emily killed the one she loved and Montresor killed his friend. Both Montresor and Emily are extremely sensitive due to their mental state any action could trigger them emotionally. In their case it was being insulted (Montresor) and being abandoned (Emily). Both in their own ways are strong willed, Montresor could not stand being insulted, and Emily conducted herself in her own law and conduct.
Montresor is more cruel and rational than Emily. Montresor knew his victim’s weakness, and used it to his advantage. Knowing that Fortunato loves fine wine

When her father was still alive he controlled her, by not letting her interact with other people. Her father was everything to her so when he died Emily was an emotional wreck. Emily would not let anybody take her deceased father out of their home for three days, which shows how emotionally dependent she is on her father. Years later she becomes more and more reclusive, never coming out of her house. In her own ways she was a monument and also a nuisance within the town. Eventual she fell in love a man, a day laborer, who made it quite prevalent that he did not want to get married. In the end she poisoned the one she love to prevent him from leaving.
