In the short story of A Rose for Emily, the relationship that Emily has with the society is different unlike in other cliche stories. Emily Grierson, in what I have understood in my reading, is keeping herself away from the people or the townspeople because she doesn't want them to know her real identity. For me she is pushing everyone around her away to be kept from their scrutinizing eyes and judgement that they would throw at her. Emily doesn't want anyone to interfere with her life therefore she pushes away everyone and live her life in accord to her own definition of right conduct and rules. She was pitied by the townspeople for keeping herself away from them, for her being alone in the house and not even conversing with anyone around their vicinity.
For me the person who has the power in their society is Emily because she does everything she wants without minding what others will be saying about her. She lives her life according to her own rules in life. She does not pay taxes since her father died because as the previous mayor of her town, Colonel Sartoris had said, her father had given or contributed a great amount of money for their town so she does not need to pay the taxes that everyone pays. It is also shown how the new town mayor had a talk with Emily just to make her pay the taxes intended for her again. What the mayor did was for the equality to be showed in their town, for the townsmen to see that equality is still needed for them to have a much better town with all the not paying taxes stuff. Everyone should do/ fulfill their responsibilities and duties in their place rightfully and with fairness. What Emily is doing is a contradiction to the social order that should be seen in their town because she is not paying the tax intended for her to
