Examples Of Foreshadowing In A Rose For Emily

There are few authors that can write a short story that is both intriguing and incorporates a full story. The story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner wrote in 1931, has both of these things with a dark twist. Although most of Faulkner’s stories are unique such as “As I lay Dying” (1930) and “Sanctuary” (1931), the one that stands out the most to me is “A Rose for Emily”. Within this story, the two themes that are really emphasized would be death and change and it is easily seen how each theme progressed with the story. What makes “A Rose for Emily” unique is the foreshadowing in the story, the question of Emily’s sanity, and the narration is done from the towns peoples point of view. Out of many types of writing styles, foreshadowing seems to be the most intriguing since the audience knows the outcome yet does not know the path that leads to it. In this story "A Rose for Emily", there are many occurrences of foreshadowing. Miss Emily 's relationship with Homer is unwelcome in the town and her relatives are forced to try and stop it, but Emily tries to take matters into her own hands. The most daring foreshadowing event is when Emily buys arsenic from …show more content…
At a first glance, the story seems just that, a story. But through analyzing and reading further into detail, the reader can see the depth of Miss Emily. This is possible through the foreshadowing of events, which non-chronologically shows the readers the most important events. By carefully looking at Miss Emily 's characteristics and the changes through the story, the readers can also tell that there is something odd and unsound about Miss Emily and perhaps she is not completely normal. Lastly, the most interesting aspect of the story, in my opinion, is the narrator. If the reader intensely looks at the wording the author uses, the reader can draw some conclusions and raise even more questions about the dark and twisted

The way “A Rose for Emily” is written shows the incredible effectiveness of foreshadowing and writing stories with different orders to begin from. From beginning with her funeral to jumping to when her father was alive and even the days before her death, the story shows how Emily, the protagonist, grows to be who she is at the end of the story. William Faulkner writes the “A Rose for Emily” lacking chronological order of the events in the story. In the short story “ A Rose for Emily “ William Faulkner presents us with a very intriguing story that starts with the death of Miss Emily. The whole setup of the story is very intriguing and this is shown through Miss Emily’s character and the way she acts and what she does making her a round character . The way she is developed leaves the reader hanging on what her next step is, since little is known behind her reasons for her actions and it is left to the reader to interpret her actions. To begin with, she is a very reserved woman who has stayed inside her house for multiple years. To the people in the story and the reader, who know little of her she is a very intriguing person that holds many things to herself.…

The first tangent in the structure of the plot happened thirty years prior to Emily’s death and recently following her father’s death in the second section of the story, speaking about “the smell” that seemed to appear from the southern home. This rancid smell seeping from Miss Emily’s home was used to foreshadow both the death of another character and how she was affected by the loss of her father up until her own death. The smell is representative of a dead body while decomposing and implies that Emily was so desperate to not lose her father that she denied the townspeople the ability to take him from her to avoid desolation. The second time-shift in the plot flashed back before the smell to the death of Emily’s father. It represents the point in her life when Miss Emily Grierson felt most abandoned as well as the beginning of her isolation from the rest of the town.…

William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is a story that addresses the symbolic changes in the South after the civil war. Miss Emily's house symbolizes neglect and poverty of the new times in the town of Jefferson. The rampant symbolism and Faulkner's descriptions of the decaying house, coincide with Miss Emily's physical and emotional decay, and also emphasize her mental degeneration, and further illustrate the outcome of Faulkner's story. Miss Emily's decaying house, not only lacks genuine love and care, but so does she in her adult life, but more so during her childhood. The pertinence of Miss Emily's house in relation to her physical appearance is brought on by constant neglect and under-appreciation.…
