Symbolism In A Rose For Emily

“A Rose for Emily” is a short story where a mentally ill woman, as a result of her neglectful father, kills her lover. In “A Rose for Emily,” the author William Faulkner displays that the murder of Emily Grierson’s boyfriend was not gender-driven. As seen throughout the story, Emily’s father constantly neglected her and treated her as if she did not matter. The proof that this murder was not gender-driven is seen throughout the story with the author’s use of the third-person narrator, irony, also including symbolism. Through the author’s third-person narration, the reader receives information from another side of the story. During most of the story, a neighbor of Emily seems to be telling the story. The grey hair that has accumulated over the years symbolizes the stressful situations that Emily was obligated to go through. She did not want her loved ones to leave her. The acceptance of death was something that Emily could not face. She created this utopian world where death did not exist- and it was upstairs with her dead lover. She was constantly stressed by cause of the ones that she truly loved, neglected her in any way. Her house could be seen as a symbol of how Emily was once beautiful, and from the neglect of her father, she ,at that point, became aged and damaged just alike the house. Emily had been undervalued by her father, which led to the ignoring of her house. She had been emotionally beaten down from the neglect of her father, and she did not comprehend death. In conclusion, “ A Rose for Emily” was not gender-driven. Emily had been mistreated by her father. There were frequent signs of a mental disability shown by Miss Emily, yet no one physically helped her. Throughout the story, Emily faced critical situations that created advanced symbols and situational irony that pulls the reader in and helps them understand different views of the
