As time goes by Wayne’s beliefs slight start to change and become more complex. Gutradt states in the book, “During my [Gutradt] second winter at Wat Opot, Wayne told me that he was disgusted with what was being done in the name of established religion and he had stopped calling himself a Christian. He preferred to think of himself as a follower of Jesus” (Gutradt 117). Even though Wayne stated that he is no longer a Christian, his beliefs and practices a very much Christian based. That being said, some of the practices he does are not really what a person who is Christian would do, as Gutradt explains in the book, “He [Wayne] had made it clear to them {his congregation in Michigan] that he did not consider it his job to convert the children to Christianity, and, as he once told me, ‘If God wants someone to be Christian it will happen. That’s not my department’” (Gutradt 118). This decision that Wayne made not to convert the children to Christianity had a significant impact on the community. It resulted in his congregation in Michigan pulling out all their funding for the Wat Opot community. Their funding was greatly needed but Wayne stood by his beliefs and didn’t change them just to keep the
