A Rhetorical Analysis: The Use Of Cell Phone Use While Driving

The topic of cell phone use while driving is becoming a much larger problem as technology expands and people tend to use their cellular device to fill empty time. Studies have been conducted to put the controversy at ease and has shown the link between cell phone use while driving and crashes and also support the belief that driving while on the phone causes crashes in real life. However, lack of data leaves room for people to believe that there are other greater distractions that contribute to crashes. Also, there are numerous benefits that can come from cell phone use while driving. The articles “The Use of Cell Phones While Driving” and “Cellular Phone Use While Driving: Risks and Benefits: Section 4. Benefits of Using a Cellular Phone While Driving” by Karen S. Lissy, M.P.H., Joshua T. Cohen, Ph.D., Mary Y. Park, M.S., and John D. Graham, Ph.D., show opposing views about the issue on cell phone use while driving. …show more content…
The author uses statistics from reports and studies to show logic behind his or her reasoning on their standing. Reports and studies are gathered from “The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society”, a 1997 and a 2005 American study, The American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Harris Poll. Ethos is also shown when the author provides this information, gives his or her input on the topic and lack of statistical information, and tells background information without quoting other sources. The author fails to appeal to the emotions since the document's sole purpose is to provide data showing the negative side of cell phone use while driving.
