How does the memoirist craft language to illustrate the significance of a life-changing-event?
China’s Son, written by Da Chen, is a fascinating memoir about his own childhood. He not only created a beautiful memoir, but he showed how you can form a subtle, yet powerful life changing event. When Da Chen was young, he lived in southern communist China, 1962. In his childhood Da’s family was mistreated in many ways. Just before the life changing event, Da explains he tried to sneak outside to go play because his mom wouldn’t allow him to go and play outside. Just before he goes out, he gets caught by Si, his sister. He asks his mom why they have to stay locked up in the house. His mom explains, but he truly doesn’t understand why he can’t just go out and play. His mom thinks he knows, so she doesn’t really worry about him. When Da was asking if there will ever be a time when he could go out. His mom says, “Someday, when you grow up”. The author represents how he was young and innocent. He also shows that he just wants to be a normal kid well with this sentence.
Da Chen uses Logos and Ethos in his story to make it more believable. This memoir makes sense because of how communism affected their family. When Chen’s family lost their house near the end of the passage, his dad had been discharged from his job, and since their country's government is based on communism, it's very hard to get a job. Also, they weren’t allowed to practice any religion whatsoever. At the last paragraph, Da Chen writes how he had to hide the fact he wasn’t allowed to practice buddhism. It's crazy that if you had lived at that time in China, you would have to hide your religion from other
