Sirota Shortly before the controversial billboard was taken down just a couple of days later, an article written by David Sirota, titled “ Kenneth Cole Gets Schooled” appeared in the liberal political and current affairs website, Salon. In this writing, he criticizes the fashion designer Kenneth Cole and his company’s use of adopting a slogan that dealt with a national debate over unions, particularly teachers, in hopes of capitalizing off of the public’s reaction and response. By exploring the factors that explains the formation of the union such as the education system and accountability, Sirota’s article displays a firm but biased and partial argument in the importance of unions and their role in the education system. A strength within the essay lies in his varied choice of rhetorical strategies.…

David Lazarus, of Los Angeles Times, argues for more gun regulations in response to the Las Vegas shooting by quoting reliable sources, asking forwarding questions, and focusing on other industries. Quoting provides decent evidence by giving direct support to the argument from other sources. Rhetorical questions work as an effective forwarding strategy, acting as transitions between one aspect of the argument and the next. Overall, Lazarus's argument was fairly effective, but focusing on different industries in the middle was not highly advantageous. A distinct difference exists between death caused by tobacco and death by guns.…

Bill Perry is terrified but the millennials aren't. Perry explains how millennials, mentioned to be the largest upcoming population, are “blissfully unaware” of a nuclear war that can possibly come our way. First of all, I think that millennials are unaware about the situation because it's brought up in a context of history. For example, we learned about the nuclear bombing in Hiroshima and can't believe a catastrophic event such as that would happen again. But as Perry directs his position, history repeats itself and with a greater effect, “Today, the danger of some sort of a nuclear catastrophe is greater than it was during the Cold War.”…

The world is made up of a thousand voices all trying to melt together to find an accurate description of their respective homes and tourists’ getaways. While there are people who can argue with tourists back and forth about how their country is not what they think it is, you have people who go and travel to another country and write about the same place in another point of view. In asserting that he has not written his book to extract revenge on his coworkers, Goldberg declares: "Anyone who writes a book to be vindictive is almost certainly insane.... my guess is it would be easier to give birth to triplets than write a book, especially if you've never written one before." (By this logic, perhaps Goldberg should have given birth to triplets and really made the network brass squirm.) This statement is unconvincing, though, since literary action was probably the best--if not only--avenue of retribution open to him. It is unclear to what extent anger steered Goldberg's pen (if he indeed wrote Bias for retaliation, he would certainly have had rationale) but even if he is sincere in his protestations of neutrality, could…

In the essay titled “Ways of Seeing,” by John Berger, it is apparent that the author speaks to a higher class of academics that there is a subjective way people of today’s culture view things, including art. He contends that the socially accepted normality’s skew the perspective of the current generation and it is believed that there should be multiple ways of thinking instead of one. Though subtle at first glance, Mr. Berger uses the three key rhetorical strategies; logos, ethos, and pathos to develop a persuasive argument towards changing subjective observations. By tying in logical reason to support his claim, showing trustworthiness, and giving emotional persuasion, the Author uses all three rhetorical strategies to try and change certain subjective thinking.…
