Sierra Club’s advertisement consists of a coal burning power plant and states that an innocent child, in this case Danny, is a victim to the pollution caused by the chemicals being spread through the air. Their version of raising awareness uses an emotional appeal with pathos in using an infant as a victim. While air pollution affects everyone, the use of a child gives the Sierra Club the ability to attract a large audience because of the general concept that children are the future and that they need to be protected and be provided with proper conditions in their growth. Aside from their powerful use of pathos, Sierra Club also uses statistics for ethos in order to gain credibility. In the bottom of their advertisement, with a small font they…
Bershadker appeals to logos by providing several of the laws guarding dog marketing that have been passed. From New York to California and from the “sale of animals at swap meets” (Bershadker) to “require[ing] pet stores to disclose the origins and health histories of dogs they sell” (Bershadker), Bershadker exposes the laws that have been established to protect pets in sales nationwide. Although this does a wonderful job informing the audience of the process that the government is taking to prevent animal abuse in the United States, this is not what the audience was expecting. The title of the article is “How to Fight a Puppy Mill” and there is little mention of what the general public can do to help. Perhaps if Bershadker supplied information regarding the progress that volunteers have on the puppy mill issue, then the audience will be appealed to that form of logos.…
Many of us have had an animal at some point in their life in which they loved and adored and would absolutely hate to lose. In the Budweiser 2015 Super Bowl commercial, the company portrays a relationship similar to this, between a farmer, a dog, and horse to try to persuade their audience to buy more of their products. In the commercial, Budweiser shows the devastation a farmer goes through as he has lost his dog and is unsure if he will ever see his again. This relationship is shown in the advertisement through separate events; the farmer's journey to find his lost puppy as well as the journey the puppy went through to return to home. By showing this relationship, the commercial appeals to their audience to persuade its audience to purchase…

Johnathan Foer in "Let Them Eat Dog" suggests that to solve hunger, individuals within society should eat the millions of dogs that are going to be euthanized in shelters. In Johnathan Swift 's argument, "A Modest Proposal", he suggests that Ireland combat the famine during that time by using the surplus of children as a food source. " Let Them Eat Dog" and "A Modest Proposal" are arguments written satirically to inform society of a historically long problem, indifference. Foer and Swift call upon society to recognize the problem, to move society to care about finding a solution, and to inform society of the inefficiency of instinctual thinking. These proposals were made because, they not only offer a solution to hunger, but do so in a quick, cost efficient manner.…

Vintage Camel cigarette advertisements appealed to middle class women and men by luring them in with the idea that smoking was healthy, and resulted in an elevated social status. While implying tobacco soaked in poisonous chemicals was healthy and attractive was irresponsible, to say the least, the big tobacco companies got away with it for several years. So how did Camel convince consumers to overlook the hidden dangers of smoking? Creating a campaign based on appeal, logic, and surveys, compelled consumers to accept misleading information, and contributed to their advertising success. Vintage Camel cigarette advertisements used a variety of rhetorical strategies to successfully build what remains a multi-billion dollar industry today.…
over your welfare. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty?” (Orwell 23). Not only does Squealer use pathos, he also poses a rhetorical question. Are you surprised by anything that is said on the website? Why do you think many people are so quick to believe reported statistics? While on the website and reading the article, few things stood out to me. Like many, I was aware of the animal testing epidemic as well as the arguments made by critics and anti-animal testing groups who are opposed to it.…
Once every four years, many of the standard television advertisements are replaced with something much worse: political campaign ads. There are many different types of campaign ads. Among them are characters ads, which serve to establish the good character of a candidate, bandwagon ads, which serve to convince the public that a candidate is best choice because many other people are voting for them, and evidence ads, that use facts to convince the public that a candidate is the best choice for office. There is, however, one type of ad that sparks more controversy than any of the others, the attack ad. The attack ad seeks to dissuade voters from choosing a certain candidate by attacking their character or track record.…
