Leaving home for the very first time to attend a university that is miles away can be scary and finding a community can be difficult. Most young adults leaving home usually have a support system; a group of people that have helped them get to where they are. However, some adolescents have had no support throughout their high school careers — or even their life. Emancipated youth or minors in the foster care system are separated from their families and often times are raised in unstable conditions. Thus affecting their childhood and impacting the decisions they make and who they will become as future adults.…

Our mission as faculty at San Jacinto College is to ensure student success, create continuous transitions, and enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve. To achieve student success, we all place the needs of students at the center of our planning, policies and academic and service programs, converting this in one of the core values and mission of San Jacinto College. Consequently, just to mention an example, the Aspen College Excellence Program has named San Jacinto College as one of the 150 best community colleges eligible to compete for the Aspen Community Excellence Award. Due to this fact, and many other reasons, I consider it a great honor to be a Spanish teacher in this educational institution. In the following paragraphs,…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…
