Marijuana has been a schedule 1 drug and strictly regulated since the seventies. However, a change is happening and twenty-nine states have legalized it for either medical or recreational use. In a result to legalization of marijuana much controversy has been involved. One of the main issues why marijuana is not legal is the belief it has an effect on IQ. For years the public has been informed about how marijuana has a negative effect on your IQ. As a teenager you are required to take a health class and in the class you are taught about the effects of marijuana. Ingram states that this new study proves further that Duke’s study was flawed. The University College of London took 2,612 individuals to study; compared to a weak number of 38 individuals done by Duke (Ingraham). Also the new study took a total of seven years to complete. In the end, they concluded there was no relationship between cannabis use and lower IQ. To follow that fact Ingram informs the audience of another fact of how all common drugs were noted to see the effect. In the end, the statistic was calculated that only 3% was dropped from IQ over seven years and that is a very unnoticeable number London concluded (Ingraham). The article then goes into a quote from author Claire Mokrsz, “this is a potentially important public health message- the belief that cannabis is particularly harmful may detract focus from and awareness of other potentially harmful behaviors” (Ingraham). This is a well-placed quote by Ingram; he does this to open the eyes of the public. They may also agree with Mokrsz’s quote and would like to see the positive effects of marijuana studied now.
